Why You Have to See Nicaragua’s Volcanoes (Trust Me, You Won’t Forget It)

By Jason Campos, Plugg Technologies Operations Manager

If you only had one day in Nicaragua, I’d tell you this: go see the volcanoes. Don’t think about it. Just go.

We’re not called the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes” for nothing. The landscape here is wild in the best way. I’ve lived here my whole life, and these volcanoes still amaze me every time I take the hike up to see them.

One of my favorites is Volcán Masaya. It’s active, which means yes, you can actually see smoke curling out of the crater. There’s something about standing that close to an active volcano that gives you chills like nothing else. You can drive most of the way up, and when you get out, you’re eye-level with a deep, glowing pit that looks like it’s breathing. You don’t forget something like that.

Then there’s Mombacho. It has a completely different vibe. It’s covered in clouds, so hiking it feels like stepping into a sky at times. The air gets cooler as you climb, and if you’re lucky, the clouds will part just enough to give you a stunning view of Granada and Lake Nicaragua stretching out below. I’ve done that hike a few times, and each one feels different. It’s peaceful most times… but also a little eerie in the best way.

Another one worth the effort is Cerro Negro. It’s relatively young for a volcano, and it’s perfect for thrill-seekers. This is where you can try volcano boarding. Yes, that’s actually a thing. You hike up the sharp black rock, then ride a board down the ash slope like a sled on fire. I’ve translated for tourists who came to do it, and watching their faces flip from fear to joy is the best part. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s definitely one of those “only in Nicaragua” experiences you’ll be telling stories about for years.

The thing about our volcanoes is that they’re more than just scenery. They’re part of who we are. They’ve shaped our land, our stories, and our sense of adventure. Even locals like me still feel the magic every time we visit.

So if you’re coming to Nicaragua, don’t just hang out in the cities. Get out there. Hike up the volcanoes, touch the clouds, and stand at the edge of some of the most awesome wonders of Nicaragua.

You’ll come back changed!
